The growth of franchising in New Zealand in recent years has been so fast that, perhaps unfortunately, there has not been a specialised or comprehensive local text covering the subject.

The purpose of this paper is not to try to cover all the areas that such a text would include, nor is it possible to cover the main areas in such detail as a text would. Rather, this paper, and the oral seminar presentation based on it, seek to highlight important and relevant commercial and legal aspects of the relationship.
