From the chair

Kia ora tātou

You are cordially invited to attend the NZLS CLE Tax Conference, to be held on 18 September 2024 in person in Auckland, and by live stream. Book now for the opportunity to attend in person, network with colleagues and knowledge share – spaces are limited.

We are delighted that this year’s conference, the first for three years, will feature highly relevant papers and fantastic presentations by leading tax practitioners. From the moment the Minister of Revenue opens the conference, to Lindsay McKay’s keynote presentation in the final session, we are all in for an engaging and informative day.

New Zealand’s tax and tax administration laws have been a major political battleground in recent years. The country has emerged from the strangeness of pandemic times, into a time of high interest rates, inflation, budget deficits and flat productivity. Tax laws affect us all. Good policy and operational choices must take into account the effect of new tax laws in other jurisdictions, and changes in taxpayer behaviour driven by developments in technology, such as the rise of new electronic platforms, increased use of blockchain technology, and the extraordinary potential of artificial intelligence.

The conference programme covers the leading edge issues currently faced by lawyers, accountants and in house tax managers from across New Zealand. Some of the conference sessions will be of benefit to practitioners advising on transactions – including Māori business, GST clauses, employee share schemes and tax clauses in commercial documents. Some sessions will be especially relevant to practitioners assisting clients to plan significant investment or divestment transactions – including financial arrangements, share sales and cancellations. Others will deal with aspects of the Commissioner of Inland Revenue’s audit and investigation activity – including the application of the general anti-avoidance rule, and the “sharp end” – disputes, and the Commissioner’s search and seizure rights.

The papers prepared for conference delegates are sure to provide practical and usable reference material for years to come.
Join us for day of insight, discussion and networking.

Chair: Neil Russ - Russ + Associates, Auckland
