In the year ended 31 March 2021, the construction industry contributed $15.8 billion to our gross domestic product (24% of GDP) and employed 170,000 people.
MBIE’s National Construction Pipeline Report for 2021 (released in December 2021) predicts national construction activity rising to $48.3 billion up to 2024; detached dwelling consents to peak at 26,500 in 2023, and multi-unit consents at 21,300 this year; non-residential activity to reach $10.2 billion in 2025; and infrastructure to reach $11.2 billion in 2026. This is a significant workflow for an industry which is struggling.
And yet, of the 494 company liquidations since the start of this year, 92 (18.62%) were construction companies. On top of this, we have well documented shortages of skilled labour and product supplies (notably plasterboard).
We are in the unusual position of an industry which is unable to meet what is booming demand.
